The England team were in the dressing room, feeling down and despondent. Wayne Rooney came in and asked, 'What's the matter, guys?'
They replied that they felt really fed up. The team had a match that afternoon against Trinidad and Tobago, but the prospect of such a one-sided contest was leaving them feeling totally unmotivated.
'Don't worry,' said Wayne Rooney, 'I tell you what - I'll go out against Trinidad and Tobago on my own and you guys can chill out!'
'Really? That's brilliant - thanks!' they replied, and went to the pub.
Wayne Rooney duly turned out on the pitch against the 11 Trinidad and Tobago players. 10 minutes after kick-off, the rest of the England team thought they'd better check the score, and found it was 1-0 to England - Wayne Rooney had scored in the 8th minute. Duly satisifed, they went back to their beer. They were having such a good time that they only remembered to check the score again just after full time. It was 1-1 - Dwight Yorke had scored in the 82nd minute. They felt guilty and rushed round to the changing room to talk to their team mate.
They found Wayne Rooney with his head in his hands looking wretched. 'I stuffed up, guys! I let you down - I'm so sorry!!' he cried.
'Don't worry, mate - 1-1 against a whole team when there's only one of you really isn't bad!' they replied.
'No, really - I messed up! I let you down!! I got sent off after 10 minutes...!!!' Wayne Rooney wailed.
